About NDIS

What is the NDIS?

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will provide $22 billion in funding a year to an estimated 500,000 Australians aged under 65, who have permanent and significant disability. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.
The NDIS can provide all people with disability with information and connections to services in their communities such as doctors, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.

What does it mean?

01

National

The NDIS operates across Australia, giving eligible people consistent access to disability support in every state and territory, wherever they live.

02

Disability

The NDIS supports eligible people with intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disabilities, including those needing early intervention.

03

Insurance

The NDIS gives Australians peace of mind by ensuring people born with, or who acquire, a permanent and significant disability can access the right support.

04

Scheme

The NDIS is not a welfare system. It provides personalised support that helps people build skills, increase independence and improve their everyday lives.
